Chapter Ten

Cinderella Beloved

“You look… heavenly,” Sam says, blowing her nose.

I pick up a hand mirror, turning it so I can see the reflection of the back of my hair. Jules has waved her wand and my hair looks magical.

“The flowers aren’t too much?”

Sam wipes a tear off her cheek. “No, they’re perfect.”

Jules takes one last strand of my hair, clipping on the last flower.

“Girlfriend…did I not tell you?”

“Yes, you told me.”

“Now, all we need is the dress,” Jules says, putting away her hair paraphernalia.

“Nate took it to be steamed.” I grab my watch off the dressing table and look at the time. “Seventy-two minutes and twenty seconds ago.”

“The skinny gaywad is probably ogling your husband-to-be, again.”

Sam begins to wail. I look at Jules. She shakes her head.

“Sam, what’s wrong? I’m sure the dress is fine.”

Shaking her heads, tears flinging off her cheeks. “No…not dress. You…you said…you said, seventy-two minutes and twenty seconds,” she sobs.

I look at Jules again.

She mouths, “No friggin’ idea.”

“Sam, I’m sorry, I…”

“No, no…you did nothing wrong, it’s just…you’re my sister, and only my sister would say seventy-two minutes and twenty seconds.” She blows her nose. “I just love you so much, and you’re getting married, and…”

I join her on the end of my bed, putting my arm around her.

“I love you, too, and I’ll always be your sister, married or not.”

She hiccup-sobs. I rub her back.

“I’d better go find the little dweeb,” Jules says.

“My ears are on fire. You’re talking about me,” Nate teases, as he struts on in.

Jules reaches for my dress. “Hand it over, gaywad.”

He holds it over his head, teasing her.

“You’re going down. And I don’t mean in a good way, your way. I mean in a bad way. My way.”

He hands it to her. “You’re so fun to tease, girlfriend. Your way, my way; that’s classic.”

Walking over to the dressing table, he picks up the hand mirror. “Mirror, mirror, in my hand, who’s the luckiest bitch in the land?” He points at me. “You are. Your man is lookin’ tasty. Mmm, yum, yum.” He rubs his tummy.

Jules walks over to him. Taking the mirror out of his hand, she holds it up. “Do you want to slap the side of his gaywad head, or should I?”

“Hey, I can’t help that I’m not blind, or that I’m gay. That man is,” he slaps his ass, “smokin’ hot.”

“Oh. My. God. Not even the gayest of gaywads do that shit,” Jules says.

“Well, girlfriend, I’m bringing ass slappin’ back.”

“What is it with you and the in words? Fuckin’, walkin’, talkin’, bitchin’.”

“Look who’s talkin’. Wad queen.”

This is how it’s been since Nate arrived. He’s done the impossible: putting a beach wedding together in less than three days. I’ll be eternally grateful, but…it’s come with a price. Nate is an awesome person, but he’s one of those people you can only take in small doses. Jules has OD’d and I’m about ready for a stomach pumpin’.

She hands me my dress. “Thanks, Jules, for everything.”

She grabs Nate’s elbow. “Let’s go, ass slappin’ gaywad.
